FAQs and Fees
What are your sessions like?
In the first session we will review the intake forms you have completed, and I will begin my assessment of your current distress. I will be looking for possible causes or barriers that create your child’s or your problems.
Assessment is a multi-step process and due to the need to gather a detailed bio-psychosocial history, it normally requires 90 minutes. It is this assessment process that helps me determine the proper treatment for your problem.
Also during the intake session, we will discuss your goals, expectation of treatment, and frequency of sessions. When working with families, I’ll ask each member to describe their perception of the problem and their ideas for solutions.
Subsequent sessions will be 50 minutes. We will discuss many things pertaining to the problem you are seeking help with. I may ask you to try an exercise, and I might give you “homework”. When working with children, I might meet with your child individually, and in family sessions for better effect of the treatment. Also, I provide collateral consultations to parents to answer their questions. Therapeutic tools such as props, stories, arts and crafts activities may be used with children to help them express their thoughts and feelings.
What do you charge?
$250 for the initial 90-120 minute session with parent and child, or with families
$200 for the initial 90-120 minute session for individuals
$150 for subsequent 50 minute sessions for parent and child, or families
$150 for the subsequent 50 minute sessions for individuals
Can you bill my insurance?
If I am on the panel for your insurance company, I will bill them for you. You will be financially obligated to pay me any co-insurance or co-pays, or full payments prior to meeting your deductible as outlined by your plan, as well as late cancellation fees and missed session fees, which are not reimbursable. I can currently accept the following insurance:
Magellan Behavioral Health
Please check with your insurance company about your benefits. Ask:
What are my mental health insurance benefits?
How many sessions does my health insurance cover each year?
What is the coverage amount per therapy session?
What is my co-pay per therapy session?
What is my reimbursement rate if my provider is out of network?
I will ask you to provide me with a summary or your benefits, deductible, and extent of coverage when you come to your appointment.
Can you be an out-of-network provider for me?
Possibly. That is determined by your insurance company and policy. To find out,
call your insurance carrier and ask the 5 questions listed above.
If your insurance will cover my out-of-network services, you will be responsible for paying my full fee at the beginning of each session. Charges for missed sessions and late cancellations cannot be reimbursed by insurance. I will provide receipts or a super bill for you to submit to your insurance so you can be reimbursed by your policy rate.
Can I Pay For Sessions with my
Flexible Spending Account (FSA)?
My services for your care might be eligible for coverage by your FSA. That means you pay my full fee at each session and I provide you with a receipt that you can send to your insurance carrier to file a claim for reimbursement, or send to your employer for reimbursement from your FSA. I can also accept FSA debit cards if they have logos such as Visa, Mastercard, or Discover Card.
Do you offer a reduced fee for financial hardship?
Yes, I do offer a reduced fee on a limited basis to those in true financial hardship, in certain situations. It is expected that when your financial situation improves that your session rate will raise to full fee level.
I’ll be paying out of pocket.
What forms of payment do you accept?
I can take cash, personal checks, and all major debit and credit cards. You may also initiate a PayPal payment in advance to reserve your session.
What if my check bounces
or my credit card is denied?
Appointments will not be held when you owe for past sessions. If your check bounces or your credit card is denied, I will notify you immediately, and you are expected to pay for that session before the next scheduled appointment.
In the situation of a bounced check, I can take replacement payment in the form of cash, credit card, or PayPal payment. You will also be charged a $35 bounced check fee.
When a credit card is denied, it is often because of an incorrect number or an expiration date. You will be contacted and expected to provide corrected information or a new card.
If a transaction with a debit card is denied, payment is possible by cash, credit card, or PayPal.
What if I have to reschedule or
if I forget an appointment?
I require clients to give at least 24 hours’ notice when they have to reschedule, except in situations of contagious illness and medical emergency. A car accident on the way to an appointment would qualify as a medical emergency. Bronchitis, flu, or diarrhea qualify as illness, but a normal headache does not, nor does a migraine if you have gone to work on the day of the appointment.
Appointments can be rescheduled by phone or email, or with the online appointment scheduler. I do not accept text messages.
If you forget an appointment, you are still financially obligated for it. I require all new clients to either leave a signed, undated check on file for the amount of a session for such eventualities, or to authorize a charge on their credit card for missed and late cancelled appointments.
If you can reschedule for the same week, the late cancellation or missed appointment fee may be waived.
How long are your sessions and how many will I need?
Sessions are typically 50 minutes and are usually scheduled once a week on the same day and time to facilitate consistency, accountability, and faster progress.
It is impossible to predict how many sessions you might need before I know your history and what issues are troubling you. I’ll discuss the possibilities with you once we are working together.
Can I call or email you between sessions if I have questions?
Between sessions I’m usually difficult to reach, but if your question is urgent, you are welcomed to leave a voicemail or email asking me to contact you. I may be able to answer a quick question pertaining to an assignment we’ve outlined for you or your child, but more general questions, or questions about issues that you haven’t yet introduced in sessions should wait for your next appointment time.
If you have an emergency and need immediate support, leave a message to that effect, and I’ll do my best to arrange a phone, Skype, or in person session as soon as possible.
Can I contact you on social media?
I am obligated to maintain your privacy. That means that I am not permitted to acknowledge in public -- in person or on social media – how I know you or the work we do together. For that reason, it’s best if we don’t interact on my social media pages. If we happen to run into each other in public, I will not initiate a conversation, nor will I answer questions about your child’s or your therapy, because I’ll be keeping that privacy boundary for your benefit.
What if I need a different specialist?
I have referral and consulting arrangements with a number of colleagues in various fields, should you need assistance beyond what I can provide. When needed, I’ll provide you with a list of names and contact information. I do not hesitate to refer clients to other providers when I deem that to be in their best interest.
At times I may determine that a particular technique that I am not credentialed to provide – such as hypnosis, biofeedback, EMDR, etc – may facilitate or expedite your progress. I have a set of trusted colleagues, one of whom I will refer you to if you need a special therapeutic technique.
Initial Session Family $250
Initial Session Individual $200
Subsequent Session Family $150
Subsequent Session Individual $150
Are sessions confidential?
I never discuss my work with clients with friends, family, or casual social acquaintances, and your identity and details you disclose in our sessions are held as a sacred trust to the extent allowed and required by law and your insurance company. As a mandated reporter, I am required to disclose any plans to harm others or yourself.
Additionally, if you use an insurance plan to pay for your sessions, I may be required to provide them with notes about our sessions as a condition of their payment or reimbursement.
As a licensed provider, I am ethically obligated to consult with more experienced professionals who are similarly licensed or, on occasion, to get supervision for my work with clients when warranted or required by law. In such cases, the details of your case may be discussed, although your name will be withheld when I am legally allowed to do so.
