Other Common Questions
Hypnosis is a natural state of consciousness in which your attention is focused in a particular way while your body is completely relaxed. It is a heightened state of awareness in which you may be able to observe images of the mind -- somewhat like dreaming -- but unlike dreaming, you will likely be able to comment on what you see. Hypnosis can be considered an effective behavior modification technique for adults and children.
The therapeutic application of hypnosis helps you:
end phobias and panic attacks
improve confidence and self-esteem
better manage behaviors of ADHD and Autism
reduce pain and psychosomatic symptoms
accept and sustain new instructions for changing unwanted habits
stop smoking and lose weight more easily
improve sports performance
perceive normal events with reduced or no fear
more effectively reduce stress
sleep more soundly
stop self-sabotage and procrastination
improve memory, motivation and goal achievement
connect with your higher self, inner child or past life
Hypnosis can be used to help you achieve long lasting change in mental programming and ingrained / subconscious behaviors with which you are otherwise having difficulty. Hypnosis also helps the mind make different, more healthful choices.
Hypnotherapy can be a faster way to make change in your life. Counseling / psychotherapy helps you understand how certain patterns of thought, belief, and behavior are contributing to what you feel and experience. Both are useful ways to help you gain control, increase self-confidence, and attain the life you want.
A hypnotherapy session combines time for discussing how you are progressing since the last appointment. But then, much of the session is spent working with you in a hypnotic state.
While counseling can change your awareness through discussion, logic, and insight, hypnotherapy changes awareness with connecting a relaxed state of mind with specific suggestions for new reactions to old triggers.
Can everyone be hypnotized?
When there is trust between the therapist and the client, most people are able to achieve a deep enough state of relaxation that the mind will accept hypnotic suggestion.
Are there side effects to hypnosis?
No, not in any adverse way. You might feel a bit sleepy or groggy immediately upon coming out of a hypnotic state -- just like you might when waking up in the morning from a very sound sleep.
Will I be made to do something against my will?
No, never, because in working with me I guarantee the highest ethics and safeguards are used. Hypnosis is used only to help you achieve the goals you personally identify.
What does it feel like to be hypnotized?
Most people feel so relaxed that while in the hypnotic state they report being unable to be bothered by anything. Usually breathing gets deeper, blood pressure drops to a normal level, and arms and legs may feel slightly heavy as if it is too much trouble to move.
There may be a slight feeling of floating, similar to being on an air mattress in a calm swimming pool. You will likely hear sounds from inside or outside the room, but simultaneously know that you don't need to pay them any attention.
What if I fall asleep?
It is possible that you might feel like you are asleep. However, the mind is still receptive to new suggestions for change even when you feel too relaxed to speak with me while hypnotized.
